How does it work?
Lactoferrin is a bioactive milk protein that plays an important role in the immune system response and helps protect the body against infections.
Who is it used for?
Lactoferrin is very popular with endurance athletes who regularly perform large amounts of exercise (such as cyclists, runners, and triathletes).
How does it work?
Lactoferrin is one of the fractions (peptides) found in whey protein, a form of protein derived from milk. Lactoferrin makes up less than 1% of whey protein derived from cows milk, and appears to be the fraction of whey with the strongest anti-viral and immune-enhancing effects [2]. Lactoferrin also occurs naturally in numerous bodily secretions, including milk, tears, mucus, blood, and saliva.

Besides the stimulation of the immune system, scientific studies have revealed that lactoferrin also prevents the growth of pathogens, and has both antibacterial and antiviral properties. Lactoferrin is also a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are believed to help prevent and repair oxidative stress, a process that damages cells within the body and has been linked to the development of cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease.

Lactoferrin also has the ability to bind iron. Lactoferrin is able to enhance iron absorption and thereby improve the iron status and help protect against iron deficiency [1]. Lactoferrin, as an ingredient of cow's milk, has been consumed by humans for centuries. Lactoferrin is also consumed through other milk derivatives such as cheese, whey protein, ice cream, and yogurt.
How do I use it?
Approximately 500-1000 milligrams of a lactoferrin-rich whey protein should be taken twice daily, preferably in combination with some iron.
What results can I expect?
People who include lactoferrin in their diet usually report a stronger immune system and fewer symptoms of illness or infection. Signs of iron deficiency (such as fatigue and lethargy) are also improved.
What can it be combined with?
Lactoferrin can be used with a wide variety of other supplements. It's very popular with women who want to ensure they get enough iron in their diets, as it helps with iron absoprtion.
